Boys Cross Country is taking their season in stride. The took first in the Lake Conference meet on October 12th, placing just in front of Edina and Minnetonka, according to mshsl. org.
“There is a reason that we run the race,” said Head Coach Mark Popp. “Our guys will be focused and ready to go for the MSHSL post-season meets.”
The section championship meet will take place on October 25th at Gale Woods in Minnetrista, according to lakeconference.org.
Last year, Wayzata took home the gold at both sections and state. “We are looking for victories at both meets again this year,” said Senior Grant Matthews.
“The teams ranked third, fourth, seventh and twelfth in the state are all in our conference,” said Popp. “Our victory against them in the conference meet bodes pretty well for Sections and State.”
The team placed first at the Marshfield Columbus Invitational on September 2nd. Wayzata had six runners in the top ten, with Junior Grant Price and Senior Khalid Hussein taking first and second individually.
“Marshfield has been our best meet so far,” said Matthews. “Everyone was feeling healthy and put up really good times.”
The boys also took first in the Willmar Invitational on September 30th, as well as second in the Metro Invitational and the Roy Griak Invitational.
“Ideally, we get better every meet,” said Popp. “So far, that has definitely been the case.”
Approximately fifty Wayzata runners will continue into the postseason to compete in the Nike Cross Heartland Regionals
on November 11th in Sioux Falls, according to wayzata-xc.com.
“If the guys run up to their abilities in the qualifying race, they will move on to Nike Cross Nationals in Portland,” said Popp. “Right now, I would say we are on the fringe of being a National Championship contender.”
