The North Memorial Blood Drive occurred on Friday, October 6th in the Wayzata High School commons, according to NHS member Grace Larson (12).
In total 135 units were collected, according to preliminary results.
155 students and faculty registered for the blood drive, with block one being almost completely filled.
Most donors did a normal blood donation, which takes about ten minutes to complete.
14 donors participated in Double the Red, a type of donation that takes twice the amount of red blood cells as a normal donation. Double the Red requires someone of a larger weight to participate, according to Larson.
The blood drive, organized by National Honor Society members Larson and Alex Pierce (12), happens three times a year, with two others in February and May.
“It only takes a few minutes to donate,” said blood drive volunteer Melinda Wiedemann- Angove. “Even if you have a fear of needles, it’s a great way to get over that fear.”
“I wanted to be able to support all of the people suffering in
hurricanes,”said first time donor Destiny Derden (11). “I’ve had
friends donate blood and they definitely said it was worth it.”
