According to Student Council Adviser Sue Iverson, 1224 tickets were pre-sold, and 406 were sold at the door for the 2017 homecoming dance. The dance was held on September 23 as a kickoff to Homecoming Week and set a new Wayzata
High School Dance record with 1,630 students attending.
“Homecoming this year was a Carnival theme, with cotton candy, a photobooth and a Twitter wall,” said Student Council Vice-President Grant Collinge.
Iverson believes that having the dance before Homecoming this year had a positive effect on attendance.
“When the dance is the Saturday after the game and at the end of Homecoming Week, kids are tired,” said Iverson. “It is also hard to give up 2 nights of a weekend for school activities when students have other commitments,” said Iverson.
Student Council kept the dance in Culinary, where it was held when the high school first opened.
“This was the second year that the dance was held in Culinary, and we believe that students seeing it last year had a positive effect on attendance this year,” said Student Council President Matthew Prondzinski. Prondzinski said he thinks that rising attendance in the school contributed to breaking the record. “We have a lot more students who want to be involved with Homecoming Week, especially underclassmen who are new to the school,” said Prondzinski.
