A new student leadership group at Wayzata High School is available for students to promote equity and awareness around diversity.
Dare 2 Be Real, an official club, is supported by advisors Dawn Johnson, Emily Miller, Candice Ledman, Jack Fariss, and Lisa Barnholdt. It is part of the West Metro Education Program (WMEP) and originated in Minneapolis.
“The purpose of the club is to discuss racial equity and to explore different cultural identities, said Dare 2 Be Real student leader Rosie Salem (12). The thing about this club that’s really unique is that everyone is invited, whether it be staff, students, or parents, to engage in these conversations about social issues and touchy topics in our society,”
“We use tools like the Four Agreements and the Compass, taught at the WMEP Dare 2 Be Real teacher training, to aid students in promoting equity education and awareness in our school and community,” said Dawn Johnson, English teacher and Dare 2 Be Real advisor.
According to the West Metro Education Program, students undergo intensive training and structured discussions that are
intended to prepare a new generation for global readiness. Through cross-cultural coalitions, students use their knowledge, skills, and voices to become actively involved in the community.
“In this club, we teach people how to speak their own truths and how to hear someone out. This includes how to respond politely and respectfully without offending anyone,” said Salem.
